Haiti response 2010 volunteering

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) notes that due to the instability of the current situation in Haiti, volunteers may not be needed for six months or more. If you are interested in keeping posted on volunteer opportunities when they arise, please contact Linda Frey, the LDR-SEPA workteam coordinator at lwfrey@epix.net.

For information about what Lutheran World Relief is doing in partnership with staff and community who were already on the ground when the earthquake hit, visit www.lutheranworldrelief.org.

Other volunteer opportunities may be available through other response groups. Please post to this blog if you hear of volunteer response opportunities in Haiti.

  1. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is requesting physicians of specific specialities to deploy with the National Disaster Medical Assistance teams to Haiti. The need is for trauma surgeons, orthopedists, anesthesiologists, and others with experience in treating crush injuries. Volunteers must be able to serve for at least 2 weeks, and be willing to live and work in spartan conditions.

These volunteers will need to be credentialed as temporary federal employees and will need to be able to provide credentialing paperwork as soon as asked. Credentialing normally takes about a week. Volunteers with these clinical skills should contact Michala Koch at Michala.Koch@hhs.gov. Not everyone who wishes to help will necessarily be deployed, and those without the requisite skills may not receive a direct response.

  2. Locally, the Salvation Army is collecting data on medical personnel interested in possible deployment to Haiti over the next several months. Doctors, RN’s, NP’s, RN’s, LPN’s, PA’s are invited to be included in this list. There is no guarantee of deployment and no known timeframe yet. However, I believe the Salvation Army is working with the appropriate partners in gathering this information. For anyone who is not affiliated with a medical team through their own medical networks, this may be a good way to affiliate.

Contact Joan Sendef at the Salvation Army at 215-825-4631 for more information and to register.
